I lived in Montana and saw it unfold in real time: a beautiful, rugged western state transformed into a playground for the wealthy. The land got bought up, the culture got softened, and the cost of living went through the roof. What was once a place of strong hands and stronger values became a summer stop for people who never knew what it meant to shovel snow in April or fix fence in the wind. And now, I see the same thing happening to Wyoming. Wyoming is the last stronghold of what the West used to be—tough, gritty, and real. People still wave when they pass each other on the road. Neighbors still check in after storms. You can leave your truck running at the gas station and trust it’ll still be there when you get back. That’s not just nostalgia—it’s the way we live. And it’s slipping away.I’m not against visitors. I get it—Wyoming is stunning. We’ve got towering mountains, open plains, wildlife that wanders across highways like it owns the place (because it kind of does), and skies so wide they make you feel small in the best way possible. Of course people want to come here. But wanting to visit doesn’t mean you should get to reshape the entire culture.I don’t want to see what happened to Montana happen here. I don’t want to see ranches turned into luxury retreats or old-time bars replaced by wine bars and sushi joints. I don’t want our kids priced out of their hometowns. I don’t want cowboy hats to become costume pieces instead of a way of life.We’ve got to find a way to let people enjoy Wyoming without letting them change it. That means being smart about land sales. That means supporting local ownership of homes and businesses. That means preserving our values—not selling them off parcel by parcel. Wyoming doesn’t need to become the next hot summer destination for the uber-rich. It needs to stay Wyoming. Real. Rugged. Untamed.
