Three stories that underlie the essence of Wyoming. The brave and rugged tie hacks that were the lifeblood of the railroad industry, the storied Capitol Building in Cheyenne where Wyoming earned the title of “The Equality State”, and Steamboat, the turn-of-the-century Bucking Horse whose likeness we encounter every day.
From the initial discovery of gold in the mid 1800's to the creation of a state historic site, South Pass City has witnessed much of Wyoming's history. In addition to being the site of Wyoming's first big gold strike, South Pass City was instrumental in Wyoming becoming a territory and ultimately a state. It was the birthplace of women's suffrage, the first territory to grant women the right to vote and hold public office. But South Pass City is perhaps best known as Wyoming's first boom and bust town, with hard working and hard drinking miners, loose women, gambling and the entrepreneurial businesses who profited from their dreams of instant wealth.
Wyoming, a state often overshadowed by its majestic neighbors, holds secrets and stories that have remained untold for too long. But why, despite its significant role in the fabric of America, has Wyoming’s intricate history been left in the shadows? Unraveling the tales of this state requires a dive into its rich past, from the footsteps of Native Americans to the booming industries of the 21st century.
After the victory in the Fetterman Fight in Dec 1866, the allied tribes of Arapaho, Cheyenne, and Sioux were too try again to force the soldiers out of the Power River country. The result was a pair of notable battles: the Hayfield Fight and Wagon Box Fight.
Established in 1867, Fort Fetterman was an isolated and lonely post; however it served as the major staging center for several major campaigns against the tribes of the northern plains.
